Treatment spotlight: Balloon sinus dilation
Balloon sinus dilation is a procedure carried out by qualified ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialists and involves the use of tiny balloons to open blocked sinuses, similar to how angioplasty uses balloons to open blocked coronary arteries.
During sinus surgery, an ENT specialist will use balloon sinus dilation devices to open the blockage that is preventing sinus drainage, to improve symptoms of chronic sinusitis.
Balloon sinus dilation technology is an additional surgical tool for the treatment of blocked sinuses. The NICE-approved procedure uses a small sinus balloon to open up blocked sinus passageways, which should restore normal sinus drainage. When the sinus balloon is inflated, it gently restructures and widens the walls of the passageway while maintaining the integrity of the sinus lining.
Recently published data in leading ENT journals shows that the technology is safe and effective. Study participants experienced no adverse events and received significant relief from their symptoms.
